3rd Grade Unit Fraction of a Number Worksheet: 1/12 of 24 and More

Finding one third of 6 is the same as sharing 6 things fairly between 3 people. This 3rd grade unit fraction of a number worksheet has four items, labelled a to d, each with a small box for the answer. The items ask for 1/12 of 24, 1/5 of 20, 1/2 of 2 and 1/3 of 6. Item a is already solved as a worked example, step by step, so your child can see the method before starting. The method turns the whole number into a fraction over 1, multiplies the two fractions, then simplifies the result. A girl plays volleyball at the top of the page, and a boy runs along the bottom. Page two writes out the same steps for items b, c and d.

Four answers to check

The answers are 2, 4, 1 and 2. In item c, half of 2 is 1, which shows that a fraction of a number can be quite small. All the answers in the key are right.

The page asks your child to "simplify your answer", but every answer here is already a whole number. So there is nothing to simplify, and your child can skip that step without worry. Multiplying a fraction by a whole number is a fourth grade standard, and fifths and twelfths go past the third grade list, so this page is a stretch.

At the table: share it out

The key multiplies and divides, but a younger child may find sharing easier. Ask them to draw 20 dots and to ring them into 5 equal groups. One group is 1/5 of 20, so they count the dots in it.

Once the drawing makes sense, show the short cut. To find 1/5 of 20, divide 20 by 5, because the bottom number tells how many equal groups to make. Then your child checks each answer by multiplying back: 5 groups of 4 make 20.

After the page: snack shares

Put 12 grapes on a plate and ask your child to give you one third of them. Then let them count how many grapes each of the three shares holds. Next, try one half and one quarter of the same plate. Finally, check the four answers with the answer key on page two.
