3rd Grade Using Inverse Operations Worksheet: Times and Divide

One fact can unlock three more. This 3rd grade using inverse operations worksheet opens with a note: multiplication and division undo each other. Part 1 gives three known facts, such as 12 ÷ 3 = 4, and under each one, two sentences have a blank for your child to fill in. Part 2 gives two facts, 15 × 2 = 30 and 8 ÷ 8 = 1. Here, your child writes the related facts without any help. A brown hen sits on her eggs, hanging from a string on the right. Page two fills every blank and explains part 2 in full sentences.

Three facts from one

In part 1, the blanks are 4 and 3, then 54 and 6, then 5 and 7. For example, 9 × 6 = 54 gives 54 ÷ 9 = 6 and 54 ÷ 6 = 9. So the same three numbers appear in every sentence of a fact family.

In part 2, 15 × 2 = 30 gives 30 ÷ 2 = 15 and 30 ÷ 15 = 2. For 8 ÷ 8 = 1, the key gives only 1 × 8 = 8. However, 8 × 1 = 8 and 8 ÷ 1 = 8 are also right, so accept them. The product 15 × 2 goes slightly past the times tables, yet doubling 15 makes it easy.

At the table: draw a triangle

Draw a triangle with the product at the top and the two factors at the bottom, as in 54 above 9 and 6. Then cover one number with a finger, and ask your child to name the fact that finds the hidden number. This makes inverse operations visible.

Page two repeats "since multiplication is the inverse of division" and then says "are the inverse of". That wording is heavy for a young reader. So say it more simply: "Division undoes multiplication." Also, ask for every related fact in part 2, because two answers per item is a fair target.

After the page: four from one

Say a fact such as 7 × 4 = 28. Your child answers with the three other members of its family: 4 × 7, 28 ÷ 4 and 28 ÷ 7. Then switch roles, so that you are the one who answers. After that, try a fact with 1 or with 0. Finally, check both parts with the answer key on page two.
