Kindergarten Digital Clock Worksheet: Which Clock Shows the Hour?

Children notice digital clocks everywhere, on the microwave, the car dashboard and the oven, and many start reading the numbers out loud long before they know what they mean. This kindergarten digital clock worksheet uses that curiosity. It has three questions, each with three digital clocks: which shows twelve o'clock, which shows ten o'clock, which shows one o'clock. The wrong choices use the same digits in a different place, such as 00:12 or 10:00 beside 01:00. So the child must read where each number sits, not just spot it. The PDF has two pages: the worksheet and its answer key.

Why the colon splits the clock in two

A digital clock is two numbers held apart by a colon. The number on the left side counts hours, and the one on the right side counts minutes. That single idea unlocks telling time on any screen.

For an o'clock time, the minutes always read 00. So the quickest check is to look right first: if the right side is not 00, it is not an o'clock time. This gives children a rule they can use alone.

The page then tests the left side. Twelve, ten and one all appear in more than one clock, sometimes on the wrong side of the colon. Telling them apart builds hours and minutes as two separate jobs. Left for hours, right for minutes.

At the table: 10:00 or 01:00?

Before the first row, cover the right half of a clock with your thumb and ask, "What number is on the hour side?" Then uncover it and ask about the minutes.

The twelve o'clock row hides a swap. On 00:12, the twelve sits on the minutes side. If your child picks it, ask, "Where do the hours live?" and let them point.

The last row is the classic trap, because 10:00 and 01:00 use the same digits. Read both aloud slowly together, one digit at a time, so number recognition works with position.

Your child may also ask about 22:00. On a 24-hour clock that means ten at night, but the answer key keeps the plain 10:00. You can simply say, "Some clocks count past twelve. We'll learn that later."

Hickory Dickory Dock and the kitchen clock

O'clock times make good daily markers. When the microwave or oven clock shows 00 on the right, call your child over and ask them to read the hour. At bedtime, point to the clock and say the time together.

The nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock also helps, since the clock strikes one and the mouse runs down. Sing it while your child holds up one finger, then try other hours in new verses. Clap once for each hour.

When the page is finished, check it against the answer key and talk about any swap your child caught. Then name the effort: "You checked the zeros before you ticked. That is real clock reading."
