3rd Grade Matching Digital and Analog Clocks Worksheet: Draw a Line

Reading a clock face takes two steps: the short hand first, then the long hand. This 3rd grade matching digital and analog clocks worksheet has five red analog clocks on the left and five digital times on the right. The times are 3:35, 11:38, 7:30, 5:45 and 1:00, but they are mixed up. Your child reads each clock and then draws a line to the box that shows the same time. Most clocks fall on a multiple of five minutes, but one of them, 11:38, needs counting to the exact minute. A small superhero flies across the top of the page. Page two shows the five lines in blue.

The five matches

From top to bottom, the clocks show 7:30, 5:45, 3:35, 11:38 and 1:00. The last one is the easiest, because the minute hand points straight up to 12. On the first clock, the minute hand points to 6, so it is half past, and the hour hand sits between 7 and 8.

The clock for 11:38 is the hardest. The minute hand is past 7, so your child counts 35 and then 3 more small marks. All five lines in the key are right, and reading time to the minute is a goal of third grade.

At the table: write the time under each clock

Before drawing lines, ask your child to write the time under each clock. They start with the hour hand and say which number it has just passed. Then they count the minute hand by fives, from 12, and add the extra marks. As a result, the matching becomes easy, and every line goes to one box only.

The instruction has one small slip. "The digital clock and analog clock that shows the same time" should say "that show", because there are two clocks, and the sentence also needs a period.

After the page: what time is it now?

During the day, stop by a clock with hands and ask your child to read it. Then check the time on a phone or an oven, and compare the two. Next, let your child set a toy clock for you to read. Finally, compare the five lines with the answer key on page two.
