3rd Grade Graphing Unit Fractions Worksheet: Draw Each Line from 0 to 1
A unit fraction has 1 on top, like 1/3 or 1/6. This 3rd grade graphing unit fractions worksheet has four empty boxes, numbered 1 to 4, on grid paper. In each box, your child draws a number line from 0 to 1 and marks one fraction: 1/3, 1/5, 1/7 and then 1/6. A pink note at the top explains the idea in one long sentence. The denominator tells how many equal parts the line is cut into, and the numerator tells how many of those parts you count. A girl with a red bow points to the note. Page two works through 1/3 step by step, then it shows the three other lines with a red dot on each.
Four lines to check
Each answer is the first mark after 0. The line for 1/3 has 3 equal parts, the line for 1/5 has 5, the line for 1/7 has 7 and the line for 1/6 has 6. On page two, every part is labelled, from 1/5 up to 4/5 for example. All the answers in the key are right.
The hard part is not the dot but the drawing. Equal parts must really be equal, or the fraction is wrong. That is why the grid paper helps so much, since each part can take the same number of squares. Placing a unit fraction on a number line is a key third grade skill.
At the table: squares as a ruler
Choose a length that the denominator divides, then count squares along the grid. For 1/3, take 3 parts of 3 squares each, and for 1/6, take 6 parts of 2 squares each. Then your child writes 0 at the start, 1 at the end and puts the dot on the first mark.
The key has two small slips. In item 1, a tiny "3/3" floats above the mark for 1, which can confuse a child. In items 2 to 4, the labels 0 and 1 sit beside their marks rather than under them. The worked example itself is clear, so it is worth reading together before your child starts.
After the page: a paper strip
Cut a long strip of paper and call one end 0 and the other end 1. Then fold it into three equal parts and draw a line on each fold. Ask your child to point to 1/3. Next, try a new strip folded into four. Finally, check the four lines with the answer key on page two.
