3rd Grade Equivalent Tenths and Hundredths Worksheet: Find the Letter

Ten hundredths make one tenth, just as ten pennies make one dime. This 3rd grade equivalent tenths and hundredths worksheet has four short equations, labelled a to d, in four large boxes. Each equation sets a fraction with 10 next to a fraction with 100, and one number is hidden behind a letter. In item a, 1/10 = u/100, and in item d, 5/10 = 50/a. Your child finds the value of each letter so that both sides stay equal. The boxes leave plenty of room to work, so your child can write each small step neatly under the equation. A girl in a round orange hat smiles beside the boxes. Page two solves each item and states the missing value at the bottom of each box.

Four values to check

The answers are u = 10, a = 10, s = 7 and a = 100. So the four lines read 1/10 = 10/100, 3/10 = 30/100, 7/10 = 70/100 and 5/10 = 50/100. All the answers in the key are right.

Equivalent fractions with 10 and 100 belong to the fourth grade standards, so this page is a stretch for a third grader. The key also uses cross multiplication with letters, which is a middle school method. A simpler rule works for every item here. To go from tenths to hundredths, multiply the top and the bottom by 10. To go back, divide both by 10.

At the table: times ten

First, ask your child what number turns 10 into 100 when you multiply, and wait a moment for the answer. Once they say "times 10", they do the same thing to the top number. For item c, 70 hundredths shrink back to 7 tenths, because 70 divided by 10 is 7.

The page has a few slips. The instruction says "expressions", but these are equations, and it has no full stop. On page two, the key writes "100 x 1 = 10 x u", where the letter x for times sits right next to letter variables. A dot or the word "times" is clearer for a young reader.

After the page: dimes and pennies

Put a dime next to ten pennies and show your child that both are worth the same. Then lay out 3 dimes and ask how many pennies match them. Next, swap roles and let your child ask you. Finally, check the four values with the answer key on page two.
