3rd Grade Fraction of a Group Stories Worksheet: Park, Nap and Marbles
Word problems show children why fractions matter in daily life. This 3rd grade fraction of a group stories worksheet has three short stories, numbered 1 to 3, with plenty of room on grid paper to work. In item 1, there are 30 children at the park, and one fifth of them ride a roller coaster. Item 2 asks how long Charles naps if he sleeps for one twelfth of a 24-hour day. In item 3, Sheldon gives one half of his 68 marbles to his younger brother, Walters. A knight on a rocking horse and a baby under a tree house decorate the page. Page two lists the facts for each story, works out the sum and ends with a full answer sentence.
Three answers to check
The answers are 6 children, 2 hours and 34 marbles. Each one is a unit fraction of a whole number, so your child divides the whole by the bottom number: 30 ÷ 5, 24 ÷ 12 and 68 ÷ 2. All the answers in the key are right.
The key always starts by writing the total, then the fraction, before it does any maths. That habit helps a child see what the story is really asking. Fraction word problems like these build on the third grade idea of equal shares, although fifths and twelfths go past the third grade list.
At the table: a few slips to fix
Item 1 says there were "about 30 children", which makes an exact answer odd, so read it as 30 children. The names "charles" and "walters" start with a small letter, and the key mixes "walters" with "Walters". On page two, "he spend" should read "he spends", and "One - fifth" should be written "one-fifth".
None of these slips changes the maths. Still, they are a good chance to play "spot the mistake" together. Ask your child to find the missing capital letters, then praise them for each one they catch.
After the page: count the room
Count the people, books or toys in a room with your child. Then ask a question like "what is one half of the books?" or "what is one third of the toys?". Next, let your child share the things into equal piles to check. Finally, compare the three answers with the answer key on page two.
