3rd Grade How Much Money in All Worksheet: 3 Word Problems

How much money is there in all? This 3rd grade how much money in all worksheet tells three short stories about coins and bills. Jerry gets pennies, dimes and a dollar bill from his mother, Pamela and her friends count $5 bills and coins, and Charly empties her piggy bank. Your child reads each story, writes the value of every coin, and adds the parts to find one total in dollars. Page two is the answer key, which solves each problem step by step. So these coins and bills word problems turn counting money into a real question to answer.

The three answers, checked step by step

We worked out every answer again from the stories on page one. Jerry gets $1.75, Pamela and her friends count $26.35, and Charly has $5.50.

We fixed the printed key before we shared it. In problem 2, the original key counted a nickel as $0.50 instead of $0.05, and it gave two different totals. In problem 3, it swapped the values of the quarter and the dime, so it found $5.35. Now every coin has its true value, and every amount uses two decimal places, like $0.70 and $25.00.

At the table: one coin at a time

First, ask your child to underline each kind of coin or bill in the story. Next, they write how much one of them is worth, for example a dime is worth 10 cents. Then they multiply or add to find each part: 10 nickels make 50 cents. Finally, they add all the parts and write one total with a dollar sign.

A word on the level. Counting money is a grade 2 skill, so this page is a review with longer numbers. Problem 3 is a nice link with multiplication, because four quarters make one dollar, so 16 quarters make $4.00. If the decimal point slows your child down, count in cents first and then write the dollars.

After the page: a story of your own

Tell your child a short money story from your day, such as the coins you got back at the shop. Your child counts the coins and says the total out loud. Then you check it together, and you talk about any mistake calmly, because errors are part of learning. After that, swap roles and let your child invent a story for you. This game makes counting money feel useful and fun.
