2nd Grade 3-Digit Subtraction Word Problems Worksheet: Nine Stories to Solve

A seven-year-old who hears "398 stickers were left" often reaches for addition, because the story is full of buying and keeping. Learning to hear the subtraction inside a story takes practice, and this 2nd grade 3-digit subtraction word problems worksheet gives nine chances. Miss Clara uses stickers for a school project, a librarian finds more books on the shelves, cupcakes vanish at a baking contest, and apples, marbles and beads change hands. One story about a soccer tournament takes two steps. The numbers reach 984, so your child will need column subtraction with regrouping. A boy reading at his desk keeps them company. A second page gives the answer key.

Why the same operation hides in different stories

Subtraction is not only taking away. On this page it shows up in at least three shapes: what is left, as with the apples; how many more, as with the boys and girls at the soccer tournament; and a missing part, as with the library books.

Second graders who meet all three learn that the operation comes from the question, not from words like "left" or "more". That is the core of subtraction word problems.

The 3-digit numbers matter too. Item 1, 792 − 398, asks for regrouping in two columns, so the written method gets real practice. The answer key shows each problem in the same order: name the quantities, write the sentence, then subtract.

At the table: the books and the soccer story

Read item 2 aloud and ask, "Did the library gain books or lose them?" Many children add 842 and 961 because both numbers are big. Instead of correcting, ask, "Is the answer bigger or smaller than 961?"

Item 3 needs two steps. A child may subtract 99 from 437 and stop there. Point to the line about the girls and say, "How many girls came in all?" Let them find that first.

For items 5 and 9, line up the digits on the grid before subtracting. Then check that each answer plus the smaller number gives back the larger one. Point to both numbers.

Short check, big payoff.

After the page: subtracting at home

Stories with leftovers are everywhere. When you bake, count the cookies before and after a snack, then ask how many were eaten. Also, while sorting a jar of buttons or beads, give some away and work out what remains.

For a game, Chutes and Ladders works well. Each time a marker lands on a square, ask how many squares are left to reach 100, and let your child touch the board to check.

When you go over the answer key together, praise the reading, not the speed: "You found the two steps in the soccer story." That kind of care makes the next problem easier.
