3rd Grade Comparing Same Numerator Fractions Worksheet: Three Models
When two fractions have the same top number, the bottom number decides which one is bigger. This 3rd grade comparing same numerator fractions worksheet has three items, labelled a to c, each with a pair of models. Item a shows two green triangles for 2/3 and 2/6, and your child picks the fraction that is less. Item b shows two blue squares for 2/8 and 2/2, and this time the question asks for the greater one. In item c, two long bars stand for 5/9 and 5/6. Every pair has the same numerator, so the shaded parts are equal in number but not in size. A girl on roller skates waits at the bottom. Page two explains items a and b, then it boxes each answer.
Three answers to check
The answers are 2/6 is less than 2/3, 2/2 is greater than 2/8, and 5/9 is less than 5/6. Note that 2/2 is one whole, since every part of the square is shaded. All the answers in the key are right.
The key says that the model with more unshaded parts shows the smaller fraction. That works here, but a stronger rule helps later. When the numerators are the same, the fraction with the bigger denominator has smaller parts, so it is less. Comparing fractions this way is a key third grade skill.
At the table: bigger parts win
Ask your child which pizza slice is bigger, one slice out of 3 or one slice out of 6. Then they take the same number of slices from each pizza. Next, they say which plate holds more food.
The page has a few slips. On page two, "less unshaded parts" should read "fewer unshaded parts". In item c, the two bars do not start at exactly the same place, and the last sixth of the 5/6 bar is a little narrower. So your child should trust the fractions more than the drawing here.
After the page: two cakes
Cut two equal cakes or sandwiches, one into 4 pieces and one into 8. Then put 2 pieces from each on two plates. Ask your child which plate has more, and why. Next, let your child set the next pair for you. Finally, check the three answers with the answer key on page two.
