3rd Grade Next Row in a Growing Pattern Worksheet: Draw Rows 4 and 5
In a growing pattern, each row has a few more shapes than the row before. This 3rd grade next row in a growing pattern worksheet has four patterns of outline shapes on grid paper. The first one is a worked example: a circle, then one triangle, then a circle, and the triangles go up by one in every row. A purple text explains the rule, and rows 4 and 5 are already drawn. The other three patterns show rows 1 to 3. Your child then draws rows 4 and 5 on the empty lines. Two gingerbread figures sit on page one, while a fairy waves on page two.
The rule of each pattern
The pattern rule changes from one box to the next. In the example, row 4 has a circle, four triangles and a circle. In the second pattern, every row adds one square in front of a triangle, so row 5 has five squares and a triangle.
The third pattern adds one square and one ice-cream cone each time, with a rectangle in the middle. The last one is the hardest, because the circles go up by one but the rectangles go up by two. They go 1, 3, 5, so row 4 has 7 rectangles and row 5 has 9. All the answers in the key are right.
At the table: count, then write the rule
For each pattern, ask your child to count the shapes in rows 1, 2 and 3 and to write the numbers on the side. Then they look at how each number changes, for example 1, 3, 5 for the rectangles. As a result, the rule becomes a short sentence, such as "add two rectangles". They follow it for rows 4 and 5.
The page has slips to point out. Patterns 2 to 4 have no instruction and no number. The example writes "one Circle" with a capital letter, and "the triangle increases by 1 the number of shapes in row one" is hard to read.
After the page: a growing tower
Build a tower with blocks: one block, then three blocks, then five blocks. Your child says how many blocks the next tower needs and builds it. Next, let your child invent a growing pattern for you. In the end, check rows 4 and 5 with the answer key on page two.
